The key points:
Critical Systems in good repair: HVAC, roofing, plumbing
Curb appeal: New Garage Door, landscaping
Mid range renovation pricing instead of ‘high end’
Once you choose your project and schedule companies to give you bids then the difficult part begins.
How do you reorganize your home to remove items for the renovation?
Sort/purge items in that area that you may not need or want.
Find temporary homes for the items that will remain. If you do not have room to store these items, consider short term storage off site; a storage unit or a gracious neighbor that has room in their garage.
The process of storing all your kitchen items for example is daunting. I have done it. The boxes lived in my son’s room; he was away at school. Timing was a key part of this renovation. I did purge items before renovation started and a few afterward.
I have also renovated my bathroom. All those items lived on my dining room table; we did not have guests during this time. It was not fun. I just tried not to look at ‘the pile’. Again timing is key.
The sorting and relocating of items in your home before and during a renovation is at least a major inconvenience and may seem like your life is on hold, but focus on the goal and visualize the outcome. It is totally worth your time and trouble; with planning, research, and the right contractor.
Once your renovation is complete, the relocation of all your items should be easier. A professional organizer can help you through the process of packing up items pre-renovation and reorienting your items post-renovation. As a professional organizer, I love helping clients through this process. The end result is great.
